Independent Study

Science Department I.S. Titles
During senior year, each student works with a faculty
member to investigate a subject of the student’s choosing. Independent
Study projects provide majors with the opportunity to examine a topic of special
interest in great depth. They sometimes include fascinating research experiences
such as elite interviews, foreign travel, and archival work. For example, in
2006, Ryan Matura wrote about Selling Wars To The Morally Conscious: A
Comparative Content Analysis Of Leaders’ Use of Just Rhetoric As An Extension
of Policy, and Melissa Levenger explored International and Grassroots
Approaches To Justice and Reconciliation: A Case Study of Rwanda. In 2007,
Erik Shoemaker examined Framing Processes and Collective Action Responses:
Organizing Efforts against Anti- Undocumented Immigrant Ballot Initiatives
in California and Arizona, while Cameron MacLeod’s study focused
on Determining Indicative Factors of International Institutional Legitmacy.
