Department I.S. Titles
We regard the three semesters of Independent Study as a
vital component of the intellectual growth of our students.
For this senior research project, each student must choose his
or her own topic of investigation, design and plan a thesis,
research important current work in the area, and argue for and
defend a definite conclusion, under the guidance of a faculty
adviser. We encourage our students to follow their own interests,
and the result is a broad range of topics. For example:
- Laura Barnhart ’06 – For the Love of Wilderness: Conceptual
Analysis of Contemporary Wilderness
- Anne Guthrie ’06 – No Longer “Nonsense Upon Stilts”:
Human Rights Standing Firm on Well-Being
- Micchael McMaster ’07 – On Global Justice: Resolving the
Conflict Between International Courts and National Sovereignty
- Andrew Russo ’07 – Concerns of an Anti-Skeptic
- Matthew Tootle ’07 – Can a Good Person be a Good Lawyer?
The I.S. experience is a way for students to consolidate and strengthen
their analytic, argumentative, research, and organizational skills
by taking ownership of a larger project. |
