Independent Study

In the senior year, each student engages in independent research into an aspect of mathematics that he or she finds particularly intriguing.With the guidance of a faculty member, each student completes an Independent Study thesis. Examples of recent projects include:

  • Chaos on S 2: The Newtonian Two-Body Problem on the 2-Sphere
  • “Knot” Your Typical Topology Project
  • Benford’s Law and the Detection of Accounting Fraud
  • Queueing Theory: Mathematical Models for Waiting Lines
  • Trying to Pull Oneself Up by Bootstraps: A Statistical Challenge
