The Major

The specific requirements for a major in history are flexible. The department encourages students to take courses across a wide range of historical perspectives and explore areas outside of their own special interest. The department requires a minimum of eight history courses, including History 401 (junior independent study), and at least three courses beyond the introductory level (only two History 101 courses count towards this requirement), plus two semesters of senior Independent Study.

Courses taught in recent years have focused on the history of China, Latin America, Africa, and Japan, as well as Europe and the United States, and on topics such as Western Travelers in China and the Intellectual History of Black America.
