The Major

The major in Art History consists of nine courses plus Junior and Senior Independent Study (401, 451, 452):

  1. Art 120 or equivalent (AP credit or transferred introductory course). This course introduces students to art history as a discipline by means of focused study of art and architecture in several historical contexts. It should be the first course taken by prospective majors.
  2. Five 200-level courses. These are characterized by a broad, narrative approach to the art and architecture of a particular period or a broad treatment of art from a thematic perspective. The prerequisite for all 200-level courses is Art 120 or permission of instructor.
  3. Two 300-level seminars on focused topics, explored in depth. These courses expose students to new methodologies and scholarly literature in the discipline and require more substantial research, reading, and writing assignments than the 200-level courses. The prerequisites for all 300-level seminars are: Art 120 and any 200-level course, or two 200-level courses, or permission of instructor.
  4. One course in studio art is required and two courses are strongly recommended.

Independent Study 401 in art history is a one-semester seminar course, taught only in the fall, focusing on art-historical methodologies, and emphasizing writing and research skills. Students must plan off-campus study so that it does not conflict with this course. Independent Study Thesis 451-452 is a two-semester undertaking in which students examine closely an art-historical issue.

The major in Studio Art consists of a minimum of eleven courses, including Independent Study 401 and Independent Study Thesis 451 and 452. No more than fifteen course credits in a major will count toward the minimum requirement for graduation. The major must involve the following course work:

  1. Three 100-level studio art courses that must include Art 151: Introduction to Drawing, and one of the following introductory three-dimensional area courses Art 161, 163, or 165.
  2. Three upper-level courses (intermediate 200-level, and advanced 300-level and a tutorial-400 approved by the faculty advisor) in studio art that must include Art 252: Intermediate Drawing.
  3. Two art history courses that must include Art 120 and one course from Art 216, 222, and 360.
  4. Art 401
  5. Art 451 and 452
